Recently I published an article about some things that could be done in order to make the journalist module better. I will link the article below, but here are some proposals:

1) Charge for newspaper subscriptions, at least a minimal sum, and tax that money. This could diminish, if only a bit, the influence of sub4sub actions (that, btw, make the MM medal completely pointless), and would make newspapers a part of the economy.

2) why would there not be organizations for journalists? As the political module has parties, the military module has units, so too could the journalists have unions with their missions and tasks.
2.5) - the missions of journalists union could be daily or weekly, for instance, to gather a certain number of votes, comments, subs or tips (endorsements); if the union meets the goal, it could be rewarded with a bonus, and if not, it should pay additional taxes (within reason!)

3) working in a newspaper could be possible - maybe part-time? A newspaper could hire someone as an editor, a lector or a research journalist (to conduct additional interviews, gather information relevant to the article, contact the eAdministration etc), and the work would be priced differently if the person is a freelancer, a member of the same, or a different union than the paper they are working for.

4) have notifications for new articles from the paper one is subscribed to

5) maybe a small thing, but: in the Top5 articles we should see the name of the newspaper, not the owner; also, it wouldn't hurt to show the number of endorsements (as it is in the mobile app).

About the articles themselves...
There are a couple of "trinkets" that could be introduced relatively easy IMO:
- To make it possible (again) to change the size, colour and font of the letters!
- Audio clips, activated at least by clicking on them!
- Resizing images in the article, maybe by BBCode
- Reader counter - if it could've been made independently, it would be a piece of cake for eRep Labs!
- A BUTTON TO SHOUT THE ARTICLE ON THE FRIENDS WALL!!!

Formating could also be a bit more competent. For instance, if there already are codes for left, center and right alignment, as well as those for columns, why is it so difficult to actually make an article in two columns??!
Likewise, it would be of great help if the preview would be realistic - sometimes*, when the article is published, it's not formated the way it looked in the preview.
*yeah, righ, sometimes

An extravagance - if it wasn't a chore for someone, it would be very useful for articles to have pages, if need be. As a journalist who is in habit of publishing an occasional TL;DR, I would very much appreciate if the site would not force everyone involved to infinite scrolling.
An extravagance 2 - imagine if articles had tabs with different versions?! Like, one with and one without images (or with and without text); tabs for different language versions (instead of the "wall of text" this article will be); and so on...

I would love to know what others think about these proposals!

Here is my original article (serbian & english):

I like your ideas! I once tried to launch a Press Association in eNL (back in the old republik), but then eRep changed the whole gameplay and made military weird and I quit playing, and just resurfaced not quite a month ago. But maybe this news-module could incorporate some of that into the game (most was organised on an external forum).

Here are some of my personal views on the module:

Instead of having journalist unions like you suggested, I would replace them with news companies, and union members with the employees in your suggestion.

The daily tasks could consist of either 'editing' and/or 'layouting' of an article from another journalist to the individual newspaper style (adding headers, pictures, reference links), which is then added to the paper under construction by the chief editor.

This would require 'inside communication' in the paper between journalists/editors, so there needs to be an ingame platform of communication within the company.

Each journalist would get credit for their actions at the bottom of the article in the colofon (writer, editor- and layout credit), chief editor would get first page article credit.

Readers could vote for articles within the paper so the chief editor can review what worked and what not to make adjustments in subjects, writers, ...

Like you said, more lay-out options are desperately needed.

I am not sure how this would work economically. Either subs would be very expensive, or wages would be really low... Maybe pay out some gold or CC via 'achievements': "publish 5 articles in 5 differente news paper editions" and "publish articles in 5 different newspapers" and the like, with "being published" means having written, editted/layouted an article.

the chief editor could be elected perhaps, like political parties. and the number of newspapers limited to avoid flooding. people could still post their own independent newspapers but perhaps in a "regional" feed, but they would not count for the achievements.

Maybe even add 'cartoonist' to the news paper collaborators, I would love to see some eRepublik satirical cartoons :D

and off course, international collaboration between countries' press and journalists would emerge (or increase), and more information would be available for rewriting for national publications.

Political parties would have their own papers, with their own members contributing (and thus boosting party activity and competitivety).

New law proposals in congress would require an article describing the law and reasoning behind it. could be written by another person for a fee, but published to the vote by the proposing member of congress.

The proposal, article and vote results would be published in an automated state newspaper (basically a feed of ingame proposals, actions, ...), but lay-outing would be a job still needing to be done so journalists could add the article towards their achievement points.

So many options to go!

That's a very creative idea! I agree - news companies would be better the way you described, and the integration with political module is something I didn't think of.

I think it wouldn't be a problem if wages were very low - after all, journalists could still be employed in normal companies and this would only be some more cash on the side (not counting achievements and awards that could be given). Of course, endorsements would still be a thing, and could be shared between all employed personel.

Not sure about the election system, though. Not because it is a bad idea; I based my whole article on things that could be added to the module with minimum effort from eLabs, since right now I don't see much incentive for them to put in the work hours. Maybe it would be better to expect a slow start - until the devs figure out how they could profit from the module. This is completely normal and natural IMO.

Hopefully, more people will join the conversation and maybe we will get that fresh start - right now, this topic needs more support.

I think this is a great idea, would love to be part of a press team and work as a journalist

After all, it would be a good reason for a lot of players, who are now in a sleep mode, to start playing more actively :D

And I think admins should highly consider this idea, I haven't seen any like it for a while

Prijem!

I wrote a quick ingame article for spreading the idea:

You could to the same in your respective countries!

Spread the word :)

Came here after I read the article published by Mael Dunbar. I must say this is great idea. The media in many countries in dead. I'm very proud that a small country like eNL has such as rich media landscape and these updates would stimulate publishers to get together and write articles to reach new achievements / medals or other forms of compensation.

Thinking of how this module could be profitable for the company, one thing dawned on me:

There could also be a very direct way of monetizing the module: the articles could feature RL adds on the side!
