A renewal and bringing some meaning to them would be nice, not removal

What meaning?
Even if (IIIIFFFFF...) devs accept, how long time do you suppose you will need wait to see such update? Is it worth the wait? Do you have idea of the average time we usually wait to see relevant updates in this "game"?
If nothing in eRepublik makes sense, why do you think decorations will? Please, don't make me laugh, dude.
Meanwhile if we have community support for their removal, we may see those junk removed "faster" than waiting devs do something "useful" with them.

Giving meaning to them is probably simple than imaginable.
Make MU competitions on global level, maybe every week or once a month - provide awards accordingly for MU members of the top 3 global units and simply keep the decorations.
If you ask me, decorations on profiles are useless, at least with MU's you can consider whether a MU has been just created or it's been around.
